Upper West Side Tacos

Menu from the Super Taco truck, 96th Street and Broadway, New York.

As luck will have it, we are not deprived of great Mexican food when we are in the big manzana. The Super Tacos truck parks on 96th street at Broadway each evening, as it has done for the last 15 years, just a couple of blocks away from our apartment. Their food is fablulous, and even though a taco costs three times what it does at the puesto de tacos on Insurgentes in San Miguel, is still a great deal in New York at three bucks, Their plate specials are really special and at seven dollars can’t be beat.

Red, White, and Bluebird

American Bluebird

Typical of America, the bluebirds here are not satisfied with just being blue but have to do the whole patriotic thing, bluebirds in Britain being a little less technicolor. Our bluebird house upstate New York usually attracts a pair each year and this spring has been no exception.

Here Fido

Boston Dynamics Load Toter

There are some scary things that can come at you in the wild, but this is about as nasty as they get. The Boston Dynamics LSSM (Legged Squad Support System), or load toter, will come trotting across the battlefield with no human attention whatsoever, to bring more ammo or burgers. The fact that it appears to be wearing jeans and sneakers is what is really creepy.

Some Kind of Sentient Life Form?

Thingie in Central Park

George Lucas or Jim Henson would love/have loved one of these. It was in Central Park and is conceivably alive. The small black thing sticking out at top left is possibly a nose, although it could be just a starter button. Did not stop to find out what was inside.

Spicy Rat

What goes into a ratatouille

Spicy Rat – Ratatouille with some Jalepeño pepper added for a bit of an additional kick. As you can imagine, the prep here (all done by hand) is somewhat time-consuming, but if you are stuck in Houston International waiting for La Guardia to clear, it is a great way to pass the time. We never cook from recipes as such, we just eyeball the quantities, just as you see here. This makes enough to fill three or four glass jars.

  1. Fry the onion and garlic in a full cup of olive oil (don’t skimp on the oil or you’ll end up with veggie soup).
  2. When softened add the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Cook on low heat for an hour or so (stir well at the beginning so it doesn’t stick)
  4. Let cool, freeze what you don’t need immediately. Spread on bread or crackers for nibbles or lunch. If you get the quantities right the oil should just begin to seprarate out a little when you are finished

We love this stuff. Left to right from top to bottom – all diced up pretty small:

  • Eggplant
  • Tomato
  • Olive Oil
  • Red Pepper
  • Olives
  • Black Pepper
  • Jalepeño or Serrano Pepper
  • Onion
  • Zucchini
  • Celery
  • Bouquet Garni
  • Garlic
  • Salt to taste

Yum.

Cherry Blossom in Central Park

Cherry Blossom in Central Park

After watching the bougainvillea burst out in San Miguel, we arrived back in NY just in time for the Cherry Blossom in Central Park to do the same thing – early this year because of the warm spring.

That’s Odd

Easter in San Miguel

We woke up last week to find a phalanx of Centurions below our bedroom window, which was not what we normally expect. But, in San Miguel you get used to pretty much everything. Actually, the Stations of the Cross being observed in our street as part of the Easter activities. The street was strewn with camomile brought in from the campesino in enormous quantities and the whole procession followed by the Limpia crew who gathered it all up again.

A Wotsit of Angels

Processional angels parked in the Oratorio

A gaggle, a giggle, a flight, an exultation ? Actually I think it is a choir, but anyway, we came across this stack of portable angels, each resting on their carrying sleds, in a courtyard in the back of the Oratorio this morning before we were chased out in a most unangelic manner by a somewhat officious señor. They are there waiting to take part in one of the many processions here in San Miguel during Easter.

Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza

Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza at the Plaza de Toros in San MIguel

Last night in the Plaza de Toros in San Miguel, we had the privilege of seeing Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, acknowledged as the World’s greatest rejoneador, or horse bullfighter, perform. To watch the way this Spaniard and the several remarkable horses he rode perform their ballet with the bulls was an unforgettable experience. For those who hurrumph at this kind of thing I am sure the bull lived and died much better than the other 100,000 or so head of beef that expire unceremoniously each day in the USA alone, just to end up in a bun with some fries.

Cute, Cute, Cute

House on Hernandez Macias, San Miguel

Now I hate cute, but sometimes it is irresistible. This house on Hernandez Macias in San Miguel, between Pila Seca and Umaran, has weathered like a Hollywood set designer’s dream. I would groan if I saw it in a movie, but here it is, only missing the guy in a sombrero leaning against the doorpost. It used to be a restaurant, but closed a while ago.
